Sodium Meta Bisulphite

Sodium Meta Bisulfite (Na2S2O5) also called as sodium pyrosulphite, meta bisulfite and disodium.

It is used as a food additive and in sanitation as a cleaning agent.  Concentrated Sodium Meta Bisulphite is used to remove tree stumps.

Sodium Meta Bisulfite is encountered occasionally as a food preservative with the combination of sulphur dioxide in sweets and moist foods, especially in the foods that contain coconut flavors.

Mainly it is used as an excipient in some tablets as paracetamol. A very important health related aspect of this substance is that it can be added to a blood smear in a test for sickle cell anaemia. This substance causes defunct cells to sickle, hence confirming disease.
